Why Fall is the BEST Time to Plant

Fall is the best time to plant. There are just so many advantages to planting in the Fall. There are fewer pest during this time of the year because of the colder weather. Plants for the most part go dormant during the colder season. Photosynthesis stops. The soil is warmer than the air, so the roots of the plants stick more firmly to the soil and settle. You basically get the plant developement without interuptions. The ideal time for planting is usually about 6 weeks before the frost (September-mid October.) This period can eaily be extended when the tempature stays up during the Fall. Even if you choose not to plant in the Fall, hardscapes are great to put in during this time! Have everything installed now, and add your plants in the Spring!

Remember... Plant your Spring bulbs now! By planting them now they have a longer period to take root and establish themselves, giving you a higher sucess rate. When planting, make sure the hole you put them in depth wise 3 times their size, and add an insulation layer of mulch on top to protect them from the winter frost.

Making the decision to build a deck is one of the BEST things you can do for your home and your investment in your home. It may seem like a big decision and a lot of money now, but you will see the long term investment pay off and then some. There are many things that determine your cost such as material, size, and shape. The only thing that limits you on your deck is your budget.

The advantages to building a deck are numerous. First of all, you add square footage to your home without the hassell of paying for or fooling with sheetrock, wiring, and other materials like an giant addition would require. It also takes much less time than a room addition. You also get 85-100% of your investment back unlike a family room addition that only gives you about a 69% return or a bathroom remodel that that only gives you 78% of a return.

Fescu Crabgrass Preventers- Word of Caution

Crabgrass is a type of weed that plagues most lawns.Crabgrass grows outward in a star like pattern that will cover the soil and smother other grasses. What makes this weed so hard to kill is that you it is an annual and it only needs to be 50 degrees fahrenheit to germinate. There are many ways to kill crabgrass that involve chemicals. Some of these chemicals work but do take caution, especially when it comes to Fescue seed or sod.

Crabgrass preventers will prevent grass seed from germinating, so if you plan to plant fescue seed, do not apply a crabgrass preventer to your lawn. If necessary, you can apply a lawn weed control on growing weeds before temperatures exceed 90 degrees.

Just take caution and really research everything before you apply, even if you hire a big compnay known for their applications because they are usually soem of the biggest killers of lawns.

The best time to do any kind of landscaping is now! There are so many things you can do in landscaping that you could have something to do every month of the year. Yesterday was thefirst day of fall and it was in the 90's! Where are the fallen leaves and cool breezes that we enjoy this time of year? Don't let the weather stop you from completing your landscaping. We are no longer in a drought so watering is okay and there isn't much rain which allows for much needed time to complete projects. Right now is the best time to do any hardscapes you have been wanting to complete. If you complete them now, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy them for the rest of the year before family and friends start gathering for the holidays!

Why We Don't Use Railroad Ties in Our Landscaping

Railroad ties have been used the past few decades as a cheap solution for retaining walls in residential homes and commercial properties. What homeowners don't realize, is that these cross ties are not only harmful to the environment, but they pose a huge health threat!

Lets start with the facts:

Railroad ties are treated with achemical called Creosote
Creosote is a chemical that is created when coal is heated to produce coke (a cleaner burning form of coal) or natural gas. This process produces coal tar creosote, coal tar, and coal tar pitch, which are all mixtures of similar compounds and are referred to here simply as creosote.
Due to the heat in the South, this tar like chemical melts and can get into your plants, soil, and ground water
Creosote has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a probable carcinogen. Studies have shown increased risk of cancer and respiratory problems in plant workers repeatedly exposed to creosote. Exposure to creosote on the skin has been shown to cause rash and irritation and in an extreme case, cancer
EPA did push tougher legislation in 1986 to stop the use of creoste, BUT timbers are still out there that were used before this time period, and they still do treat timbers with this chemical

Here are the precautions that should be used when handling railroad ties:

Handling: When handling creosote treated wood, wear gloves and long sleeves and try to minimize time spent working with ties. Work in well ventilated areas and avoid working in hot conditions when vapors are most potent.
Children: If children play on or around the ties they may get creosote on their skin and clothing and could subsequently ingest small amounts. Exposure to skin can cause irritation and rashes. Ingestion in small amounts while not life threatening, is a health concern.
Gardens: Plants have shown only limited potential to take up creosote but some compounds have been shown to attach to roots, which could lead to elevated creosote levels on tuber vegetables. For this reason, it is advisable not to landscape with railroad ties directly in contact with vegetable gardens.
Water Table:Some components of creosote are very sticky and not water soluble and will stay on the ties; however, other chemicals are water soluble and will dissolve and move with water. In areas where moisture levels are moderate, these chemicals may wash into surrounding soil with rain, but will likely decompose with time. However, in areas where the water table is very shallow or where a lot of surface water is present, there is more potential for transport of the chemicals into groundwater. For this reason, it is advisable to avoid using railroad ties for landscaping in very wet or shallow ground water areas.
Disposal and Fire:Creosote treated wood should not be burned, since burning volatilizes hazardous chemicals in the smoke. One currently suggested disposal method for treated wood is in sanitary landfills. However, check with your landfill first to inquire about local policies. Another currently suggested method for disposal is burial. However, if this option is chosen it is critical to consider surface and ground water movement in your location to minimize the possibility of creosote getting into water supplies. A landscaping contractor should be called to dispose of ties and it will be a little expensive because of the chemicals involved. If you get a cheap price, beware because they may not be disposing properly and you both will be prosecuted if caught!

You can get timbers untreated but they have a shorter lifespan as any wood that is untrated. The best way to go is with untreated railroad ties, presuure treated landscaping timbers, or block. For more information on this, go tohttp://waterquality.montana.edu/docs/wqfaqarchives/wq_faq_3.shtml.
